What They Do

South Mountain Company is a 45-person, fully employee-owned architecture, engineering, building and renewable-energy firm on Martha's Vineyard. For almost five decades it has practiced what founder John Abrams calls 'a slow business in a fast world' — designing homes and civic buildings that are deeply local, durable, and ecologically responsible.

The firm became a worker cooperative in 1987. Every full-time employee, after a vesting period, becomes an owner with an equal vote on the board, regardless of role. Pay ratios are bounded, profits are shared, and decisions about growth, hiring and strategy are made democratically.

Why They're Conscious

Equal-vote worker co-operative — every owner gets one vote, regardless of seniority.
Bounded pay ratio between highest and lowest paid worker, set by the membership.
Building stock designed for 250-year lifespans with on-island renewable energy.
