What They Do
Recreational Equipment, Inc. — REI — is a consumer cooperative founded in 1938 by Seattle climbers who wanted access to high-quality European ice axes. Today it is the largest consumer cooperative in the United States, with more than 23 million lifetime members.
Members pay a one-time $30 fee and receive a share of profits each year in the form of dividends. The cooperative's board is elected by members and decisions about store policies, environmental commitments and grant-making reflect that membership accountability.
Why They're Conscious
23M lifetime member-owners — the largest consumer cooperative in the US.
Annual dividend returns a share of profits directly to member-owners.
Closes all stores on Black Friday for the #OptOutside campaign.
