What They Do
In 2022 the Chouinard family transferred 100% ownership of Patagonia to a purpose trust and the Holdfast Collective, a non-profit. All voting stock is held by the Patagonia Purpose Trust to ensure mission lock; all non-voting stock — and therefore all profit not reinvested — flows to Holdfast and is used to fight the environmental crisis.
Patagonia continues to operate as a for-profit business making outdoor apparel and equipment, but its profits are now structurally directed to planetary defense rather than to private shareholders.
Why They're Conscious
Ownership locked to mission via purpose trust — cannot be sold or taken public.
All profits beyond reinvestment go to environmental causes via Holdfast Collective.
Decades-long track record on supply-chain transparency, repair, and activism.
